Timothy, I Love

“But as for you, man of God, run away from all these things. Instead, pursue righteousness, holy living, faithfulness, love, endurance, and gentleness.”

1 Timothy 6:11

Translations, biblical translations in particular, were once an interest of mine. It was fascinating to me how drastically meanings changed from translation to translation based upon interpretation, and how accordingly others might model their lives on those translations.

I thought of Timothy today for several reasons, some which I’m not sure how to articulate. I used this verse because it ended in gentleness, a verse I believe will largely remain the same centuries from now.

There are times I’ve pondered the pursuit of righteous living and all that follows, but it seems like participating in a race where spectators are constantly blocking your run and intentionally forcing you to trip and fall. Righteousness seems like a pit fight instead of a thing to be pursued, at least if we consider that righteousness is already within each of us, just waiting to throw the first gentle blow.

It’s a verse I’ll carry with me to the grave, if for no reason other than knowing Timothy has and will endure long after those who’ve either run or fought have decidedly won.
